The nose is fine, complex, on stewed plum, leather, dried orange peel…and lots of other things (including a hint of VA that brings things up nicely). The palate is just as fine, tense, with a silky and fresh material gradually gaining in density, and a decadent aromatic, marrying a vibrant fruit with tertiary notes. The finish delivers a fine tasty chew, with a return to the plum enhanced by citrus peel and spices.

NUESTRO DE DIAZ BAYO Origin: Castilla y León, Spain Type: Light Grape(s): Verdejo ABV: 13% Spanish dry whites, much like Italian ones, are a little under-sung in our opinion. This Verdejo offers lime and grapefruit, light grassy hints as well. On the palate you’ll get some lemongrass, quinine/tonic water, and some pleasant smokiness - a little of the smell of a grill with aromatic herbs on the go. It’s juicy and fleshy, some glycerol to texture, but also a bright citrus tang to complement. !Hola.

LA CIDRERIE DU GOLFE Origin: Brittany, France Type: Cider, Extra-Brut (Dry) Fruit: Apples ABV: 5.5% A beautifully dry Breton cider made from a blend of 12 classic apple types, crafted in a natural, low-intervention style that showcases the terroir of the Morbihan coast. Aromatics are fresh and fruity with bright apple core and hints of citrus peel, supported by light phenolic complexity and a touch of herbal nuance typical of Breton ciders. On the palate it is extra-brut with all sugar fermented out, yielding a crisp, dry profile with refreshing acidity and a delightful bitter finish. 'Aus den Garten' Grüner Veltliner 2023

NIKOLAIHOF Origin: Wachau, Austria Type: Medium Grape(s): Grüner Veltliner ABV: 12.5% Grüner has gone off the boil a bit in recent years, we feel it was quite the new thing for a while. Still, the wines don’t change and this producer is one of the best. White peach, white pepper, mint, cucumber, something of a yeasty sourdough character. It’s a fleshy wine, lime and ripe pear, a certain juiciness here, almost to grilled pineapple, a tickle of spritz, with a dusty texture carrying on a finish of solid length. Loads of character.

LUTA Origin: Nelson, New Zealand Type: White, Medium Bodied Grape: Chenin Blanc ABV: 13% Bright and textural Chenin Blanc with a vibrant expression of cool-climate fruit and careful lees aging. Aromas of yuzu, kaffir lime and honeysuckle lead into more ripe notes of feijoa and a whisper of beeswax, while a saline edge lifts the profile and keeps it lively and aromatic. On the palate, the wine is bright and mouth-watering with fine phenolics and vivid acidity that balances a creamy textural quality. RECERCA Origin: Roussillon, France Type: Orange, Medium Bodied Grape: Macabeu ABV: 13% A captivating orange wine with a compelling balance of aromatic complexity and vibrant energy. In the glass, it shows a glowing golden hue with an expressive nose of bay leaf, bruised apple, fresh herbs, fennel, crushed coriander seed, pear, chalk, stone and touches of honey, all weaving together to create an intriguing, layered bouquet. On the palate, this medium-bodied skin-contact wine delivers depth, texture and grip. Bright acidity keeps the rich fruit and herbal elements in harmony, while minerality, hay and almond notes extend into a long, saline finish. HERVÉ VILLEMADE Origin: Loire Valley, France Type: Light Grape(s): Pineau d'Aunis ABV: 12%  One of our favourite grapes, from a producer that we really love and whose wines you will see often on our list. Peach tea, melon, a herb and floral perfume, fennel seeds, strawberries too. It’s juicy, but balanced, lots of fresh strawberry and raspberry, bright acidity, with a chalky and dusty texture. A glycerol slipperiness, though it finishes tight, with a twist of blood orange and excellent length. Nice.

Spätburgunder 2022

MEYER NÄKEL Origin: Ahr, Germany Type: Medium Grape(s): Pinot Noir ABV: 13% Spiced plum, quite exotic in a way, a sort of beetroot earthiness, mocha and nori. This is a fleshy wine, quite umami and savoury, not your fruit-driven Pinot and definitely far away from Burgundy. Salted plum and orange peel, a juicy cut of acidity, a grainy grip of tannin, with a nutty and savoury finish of good length. An interesting and somewhat idiosyncratic take on Pinot Noir, but very good all the same.

DOMAINE PHILIPPE GILBERT Origin: Loire Valley, France Type: Medium Grape(s): Pinot Noir ABV: 13% Strawberry, blood orange, quite some five spice exotic top notes, nutmeg, dried roses, a lick of hibiscus. It’s bright and gently sappy, rhubarb and red plum, a fine grained emery grip to tannin, with a bright and juicy red cherry and strawberry finish of excellent length. There’s a bit of extra electricity and energy to this wine, and we reckon it will be a beautiful thing with considered cellaring.

Deep in colour, the wine opens with ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry, layered with subtle earthy notes and gentle oak spice that add depth without overpowering the fruit. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied with firm yet balanced tannins and fresh acidity. Dark fruit leads, followed by savoury and lightly smoky nuances, finishing structured and clean. A robust but well-composed red that pairs naturally with grilled meats, lamb and hearty dishes.

BODEGAS CARE Origin: Aragon, Spain Type: Full Grape(s): Grenache, Carignan ABV: 14% Pretty amazing wine. So perfumed, so minty, so silken and so seductive. Cherries, raspberries, spearmint and floral characters put on an exaggeratedly pretty show, the nose and then the palate totally wooing you from the outset. This is bright, but surprisingly full in weight, vibrant and, even, joyous. Tannin feels grapey (skinsy) in the best of ways. One sip and we were hooked.

DOMAINE DE RAPATEL Origin: Languedoc, France Type: Full Grape(s): Grenache, Syrah ABV: 14.5% Big red from the south of France. Strawberry, raspberry, plenty of spice and perfume. It’s medium-bodied, strawberry and spice, Earl Grey tea perfume, a fine, stoney grip to tannin. A little savoury and nutty. Balanced acidity, finishing long with a dusty/peppery flourish. It has a certain softness and come-hither appeal, and that’s a point of difference too. Beautifully made and absolutely delicious.
